The Charter of Compassion

An article on the CNN website (Is Religion About War or Peace?) cited the compassionate actions of Saint Francis of Assisi toward Moslems during the Crusades. It also referenced the Charter of Compassion - a modern document that acknowledges compassion to be at the center of all "religious, ethical and spiritual traditions."

It is a statement that we can - regardless of our differences - work together to build a more just and peaceful world. It is a positive statement of hope - one that on December 31 will be delivered to world leaders whose nation's are presently involved in conflict. The delivery will include a list of all those affirming the Charter.

I must say that I have not (yet) affirmed the Charter of Compassion. While I find it a noble and positive statement, I am concerned that it is one that will not effect change. Too often, I have joined a movement only to see it fizzle. But I encourage you to read the Charter (or watch/listen to it using the above video) and to, if you feel called to do so, affirm the Charter before 12/31.

"There will be no peace among the nations without peace among the religions. There will be no peace among the religions without dialogue among the religions." - Fr. Hans Küng (1928 - )
