The day originated in 1936 by the Presbyterian Church for the catholic (meaning universal) church can celebrate together the Oneness of the Body and the Oneness of Christ, Jesus.
The following prayer was written for Worldwide Communion Sunday by Presbyterian Minister Rev. Dr. Byron Anthony Wade:
O Creator God, as we gather to worship you on this day, let your Holy Spirit fall upon this community of faith. As we celebrate and partake in Communion with other believers, we ask that you may fill us with the bread of heaven and the cup of salvation. Empower us through Word and Sacrament that we may work for justice and peace for all people. In the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.Thomas Campbell, founder of the Disciples of Christ, said that "the church in the whole world is united. … It is one." Communion - the Lord's Supper - the Eucharist ... irregardless of its label or the method of partaking, the general purpose and meaning is the same. As a catholic church, we are One.
